She is a resident of Florida (that alone speaks volumes) and recently gained my ire when she linked to a headline stating that courts “quietly” ruled that vaccines or a vaccine preservative called MMR is the cause of autism. Before I get to the meat of the matter, I want to tell you about one of my favourite authors, George Orwell. Or Eric Arthur Blair as he was known to people around his home. Eric‘s biggest talent other than creating stories that were equally frustrating and compelling to read was writing about the cause-effect between how people behave and what they are taught to believe about themselves. His masterful way of writing is reflected in the fact that this relationship I have spoken of is indeed equally demonstrable no matter what order you write it in.

Living with diabetes, a reflection

Around this time in 1988, I started to get really, really sick. So sick that I lost a substantial portion of my bodyweight, was thirsty enough to empty a double-doorway refrigerator of all its liquids, and spend substantial portions of days feeling so listless that I was practically sleepwalking. Then, on my mother’s birthday that year, I was taken to a general practitioner who listened to a brief rundown of my symptoms, tested my blood and my urine, and told me plainly that I had developed diabetes.

Science is really one of the most wonderful and misunderstood things about the Human experience. I am no scientist myself. Hell, I only understand enough about it to know when someone is trying to bullshit me. But a recent proclamation of intent to “debate” got me thinking. I have a confession to make. I used to try to reduce my blood sugar as much as I possibly could before going to sleep in order to make it vaguely possible for me to even sleep. Ever sat up for hours at night with a feeling like your mouth is filled with vomit and the skin around your lips has become encrusted shit? That is basically the feeling I get when I lie in bed at night with a blood sugar even slightly to the North of 10.0 mmol/l.
