Author’s note: Following is the second part of a new story that I started as an experiment and began to enjoy writing so much that I simply forgot to stop. You can read the first part here. It was whilst writing this story that I discovered I had also laid excellent groundwork to explain how Falathen comes to decide she has lived long enough.
Further to the above, one of the rules of my canon is that whilst Elves live indefinitely, the experience of seeing almost entirely the same stuff over and over for hundreds or even thousands of years has demonstrable effects on their health. Although I have not demonstrated it well in this story, Queen Falathien has a reputation amongst other rulers as being one step short of barking mad. Such is the price of being ~20,000 years old. Readers of this publication and all of the things linked to or referenced therein will have noticed a bit of a lean towards unhappy, dark, even scary news. Or outright condemnations of some despicable behaviour, in some major cases. I am sure that it makes the world that I inhabit seem very scary, rotten, or outright evil. And on rare occasions, one will get the sort of person who does not know any better asking why no good news is forthcoming, or why references to good elements in the world the author inhabits are forthcoming. I will not mince words here. During the last three years, Hollywood has developed such a raging hard-on for 3D that the attendance of theatrical exhibitions I used to make a habit of has fallen off to nothing. I hate it. Even when I have a good seat from which I can see anything in the poorly-designed theatres that are the expected norm in some places I will not glorify by naming here, trying to watch such an image is tantamount to pouring salt into the eyes. In my previous entry, I made reference to how the videogame industry, as well as the entertainment industry in general, has evolved. I also said that the use of the word was subject to certain understandings, if only in different language. I promised that I would explain this, and then seriously forgot to do so for the rest of the entry in question. Well, unlike certain people that I will not mention this time around, I like to keep my promises. I make them with the intent of keeping them, no matter how much it ends up putting me out. So now is a good time to explain what I mean when I say that the videogame industry has evolved over the past thirty or so years.
This means that I need to explain a few things about evolution as I understand them. If you are a scientist, particularly one that deals frequently in evolutionary theory, I beg your indulgence. It is for a good reason.
