It seems a common problem in most, if not all, debates on the Internet these days. An idiot, and I am not naming names here because there are far too many examples, will write that X is better than Y, but never any specific reason why, much less a credible one. In my previous post, a sort of description about the wonders of having the Alien anthology on Blu-ray Disc, and in a comment I posted elsewhere that I do not care to talk about right now, I stepped very much in the wrong direction in this regard and made an attack upon the view of one writer that could be considered somewhat ad hominem. As a semi-early adopter of the Blu-ray Disc format, I have noticed two distinct patterns in terms of which releases I will line up to buy next. On the one hand, I will buy a lot of discs where I have heard good things about the film therein (or seen it as a rental) and am willing to take a punt. Examples of that include Crank: High Voltage or Machete. On the other hand, there are films I saw repeatedly as a boy and, since coming to fully grok the benefits of progressive video and lossless audio, have been dying of curiosity to learn how they scrubbed up on the new format. I will not mince words here. During the last three years, Hollywood has developed such a raging hard-on for 3D that the attendance of theatrical exhibitions I used to make a habit of has fallen off to nothing. I hate it. Even when I have a good seat from which I can see anything in the poorly-designed theatres that are the expected norm in some places I will not glorify by naming here, trying to watch such an image is tantamount to pouring salt into the eyes.
