Why I will not watch DVD anymore (aka in praise of BD)

I have written about or referenced a lot of different films in entries prior. That is a given. As I have also written previously, I grew up in a household that was one of the first to have a VCR (Video Cassette Recorder) in the house.

Revisiting the classics: A look at A Scanner Darkly

Okay, A Scanner Darkly (the film) is not that old that it really should be called a classic. But is one anyway. The novel on which the film is based is now thirty-five years old. The film turns six years old in July of this year, which should tell you something about the lasting dark appeal of the novel. Now, I will step up to the plate right here and admit that I have not read the novel. Unlike some assholes I can name, I did not rush out and buy an e-reader the second they were brought out because it is the hip, “noooooooow” thing to do. And unfortunately, controlling the flow of literature into a country like Arseholia is even easier than controlling the flow of unapproved films or music.

Evolution as a concept, and its meanings

In my previous entry, I made reference to how the videogame industry, as well as the entertainment industry in general, has evolved. I also said that the use of the word was subject to certain understandings, if only in different language. I promised that I would explain this, and then seriously forgot to do so for the rest of the entry in question. Well, unlike certain people that I will not mention this time around, I like to keep my promises. I make them with the intent of keeping them, no matter how much it ends up putting me out. So now is a good time to explain what I mean when I say that the videogame industry has evolved over the past thirty or so years.

This means that I need to explain a few things about evolution as I understand them. If you are a scientist, particularly one that deals frequently in evolutionary theory, I beg your indulgence. It is for a good reason.

The difference between “saw” and saw, in a nutshell.

I forget exactly when it was, but I made an allusion to the fact that seeing and seeing, as it were, are two different things. Because there is an ever-growing threat to the increase in quality of visual presentation, the time is good to explain what this difference is.
